Defensive Cane

BASIC DEFENSIVE CANE, PART 1

People are interested in the Martial arts for many reasons including development of mind, body, and spirit and of course enhancing your self-defense skills. Regardless of your training in the arts, you should develop a pragmatic view of enhancing your defensive skills. Utilizing a self-defense Cane is a fantastic way to enhance your defensive skills. A properly designed Cane if used correctly, can amplify your skills. The walking Cane is now an accepted accessory in most civilized cultures and is accepted on Airplanes.

TIP: If carried on a airplane, please refer to it as your walking Cane, not fighting Cane, Combat Cane, Black Belt Cane etc.

Many cultures developed a powerful self-defense system utilizing the Cane or stick. From the Korean style of Haipkido Cane fighting, Pilipino stick fighting to Irish Whiskey Stick Dancing. I have studied various martial arts and have selected 12 simple basic movements. You can combine these movements in multiple ways to create many powerful self-defense techniques. You can combine these movements with basic distancing and positioning footwork. What ever close infighting tools you already know, Knee's, low kicks, Elbows, Traps etc can be incorporated also.

There are many types of canes but the most versatile and legal is a sturdy all wood cane with a curved Horn or handle section. The horn can be used for striking and hooking. The Horn should be large enough to wrap around a neck or at least a 6" inside Dia. The Horn can be slightly open for hooking or slightly closed for trapping. Some Combat Canes have carved gripping areas for pulling and stylized and sharpened horn tips for attacking soft tissue. As far as wood, you have several choices. For strength and light weight, it's hard to beat a 1 to 1/8' Dia solid Rattan Cane. American Hickory is another good choice, very strong although some feel heavy. Cocus Wood some times called Golden Wood is an Asian Hardwood, slightly lighter and very strong. This is a very popular choice for strength and reasonable cost.

Most attacks on the street will be up close, vicious and happen quickly. You will not have time to adopt defensive stances. You will need to block and avoid, basically take ground and position your self to negate your opponents attack. For Example, your attacker will find it difficult to strike you if you are standing on his foot and shoving your Cane with both hands into his neck.

If you use your Cane as a walking aid, you should cut it for proper fit. Standing erectly with your Cane in supporting hand, your elbow should be slightly bent. Let's call this the REST position. (Pic REST) Measure twice and cut once. If you don't use it for support, For Combat Canes and how to DVD's, see www.defensivecane.cdavisgroup.com

Greetings

Thanks for the nice comments. As an older martial artist, I am enjoying gathering self-defense methods that the average person can use. My second DVD, “Defensive Cane 2-Steet talk” is available now on my web site. I have completed shoots for two more DVD,s “Defensive Escrima Sticks”- Self Defense utilizing sticks and empty hands and “Defensive Flashlights and key chains”-Self Defense utilizing available items.

Thanks again

Using a cane as a self defense weapon is very helpful. But my query is that, how many people uses a cane? Isn't it not that canes are used by old persons? Probably, an umbrella can be used as a substitute. A stun gun or pepper spray can be one effective weapon. =)

Thanks

There is a lot of MA information out there. I just try to be honest with common sense logic and real information. I am waiting for "Cane kwon do" with a picture of a martial artist execuiting a flying side kick while holding a cane.
