Self Defense with a flashlight

A quality Flashlight is a perfectly legal self-defense tool. There are large all metal flashlights and smaller high intensity flashlights. For large flashlights, lets look at the “Maglite” brand of Flashlight. This older technology is reliable, can be bought at a good price and is an awesome defensive tool. “Maglites” are made of Aircraft aluminum (7075-T6 I believe) with an oxide finish in different colors. They range in size from C size in 2,3,4 and 5 cells to the D size in 2,3,4,5, and 6 cells. You can use them with regular alkaline batteries or slightly lighter rechargeable NiCad batteries. This 4D Maglight is 14 inches long and is a formidable (and legal) defensive tool. The 4 D produces 59 lumens of incandescent light and run time is approx 15 hours before recharge. These larger Flashlights are great for blocking and striking. They are great impact tools and because of their size and construction are a good deterrent also, you can have them in your car in a mount or on a belt holster

The second group of lights is the smaller high intensity lights. ”Streamlite” is my favorite brand. They have LED bulbs and can produce up to 100,000 candles to temporarily blind or disorientate your attacker. They are also good for fist loads, impact tools for Hammer fist strikes and ridge hand strikes. Also various compliance techniques.

A word of warning. If you use a flashlight for self defense, make sure that you really need to protect your self or a loved one from potentially crippling or lethal danger as you can deal a crippling or lethal blow with these flashlights. Learn to use these tools effectively to minimize damage to your attacker.

A good way to learn how to use these tools effectively is to first practice with two Escrima sticks utilizing basic Philippine martial arts. You will move both hands independently and equally to build a solid foundation of self-defense. You should learn basic stick drills to promote ambidextrousness. You can apply these stick techniques to flashlights, Keychains or what ever you have in your hand.

Clever way to protect yourself and of course, as you say, perfectly legal

Thanks for the positive comment. As you know, if you have ever done any stick work its great training. It may be impractical to carry a 18" long rattan escrima stick around but a 14" long aluminum MAGLITE flashlight is fantastic to have in your hand.
