As far as material, Rattan canes are light, strong and slightly flexible. For a stiffer and slightly heavier cane, an all-wood cane is a good choice. Crocus wood is an Asian hard wood that is a little heavier, attractive and priced reasonably, American hard wood canes are slightly heavier, stronger and have beautiful graining. You can get them in an aggressive looking Hapkido style combat fighting cane with bird heads carving or less aggressive simpler styles. Don’t let the names scare you; they can be pieces of artwork. Pick up a DVD with your cane to give you cane self defense instruction.
