The Walking Cane as a Self Defense Tool
68People are interested in the Martial arts for many reasons including development of mind, body, and spirit and of course enhancing your self-defense skills. As you get older and regardless of your training in the arts, you should develop a pragmatic view of enhancing your defensive skills. Utilizing a self-defense Cane is a fantastic way to enhance your defensive skills. A properly designed Cane if used correctly, can amplify your skills. The walking Cane is now an accepted accessory in most civilized cultures and is accepted on Airplanes.TIP: If carried on a airplane, please refer to it as your walking Cane, not fighting Cane, Combat Cane, Black Belt Cane etc. Many cultures developed a powerful self-defense system utilizing the Cane or stick. From the Korean style of Haipkido Cane fighting, Philippine stick fighting to Irish Whiskey Stick Dancing. I have studied various martial arts and have selected 12 simple basicmovements. You can combine these movements in multiple ways to create many powerful self-defense techniques. You can combine these movements with basic distancing and positioning footwork. What ever close infighting tools you already know, Knee's, low kicks, Elbows, Traps etc can be incorporated also.
Most attacks on the street will be up close, vicious and happen quickly. You will not have time to adopt defensive stances. You willneed to block and avoid, basically take ground and position your self to negate your opponents attack. For Example, your attacker will find it difficult to strike you if you are standing on his foot and shoving your Cane with both hands into his neck. For action clips, see

I've been making canes and walking sticks in Southern Ontario for about a year now. Any sites or examples of cane designs would be greatly appreciated. Thank you
Hi,
This is a very good idea!!
You can never be to sure what is going to happen.
This is a wonderful idea for any one that is walking with a cane.
thanks for sharing this.
Cane Fu, once again. Some very good points. Now, how to combat the wolves on our road while we are out walking with the cane:-)
I learned a Shaolin cane form from Shifu Ch'ang Dung -sheng and a BaoBiao drill from Lee Long-dao,and I learned to use a shillelagh and a Bhata from Gregory Doyle and I carried canes on aircraft and in casinos where I couldnt take a pistol. Now my leg has been amputated and I am teaching myselfto use a cane in a wheelchair.Canes are great self defense weapons.

Found your article this morning. I am very interested in walking cane being used for self defense as well as a very beloved walking aid. I have seen the cane masters technic and found it a bit aggressive. My interests are help the elderly (I am one) and handicapped (that is me also) to have a means of fending off an agression. corkif44@yahoo.com
